History Of The Loray Mill Village, Gastonia, North Carolina, HUBZone
A Legacy of Industry, Community, and Renewal
Located in the southwestern Piedmont region of North Carolina, Loray Mill Village in Gastonia has long been a symbol of American industrial resilience. Built in the early 1900s by John Love and George Gray—whose names combined to form “Loray”—the mill grew into one of the largest single-roof textile mills in the South, employing more than 3,500 workers at its peak. Its success drew northern industrialists to the region, attracted by an abundant workforce and favorable conditions for textile manufacturing.
During World War I, southern cotton mills flourished as federal contracts for uniforms, tents, and other defense materials drove production and wages to record levels. However, the prosperity proved temporary. Economic downturns and harsh working conditions led to the Loray Mill Strike of 1929, one of the most pivotal labor movements in U.S. history. The conflict—marked by tragedy and courage—sparked national dialogue on workers’ rights and helped shape the future of organized labor in America.
Following the Great Depression, the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company acquired the facility and operated it for over six decades to produce woven tire cords for the booming automobile industry. When Firestone closed the plant in 1993, the mill stood silent—a once-vibrant center of innovation and community life awaiting renewal.
Today, as part of a designated HUBZone, Loray Mill Village represents both a historic landmark and a catalyst for economic revitalization. By establishing operations here, ProSidian honors the area’s industrial heritage while contributing to its modern resurgence—creating jobs, fostering growth, and continuing the spirit of progress that began over a century ago.
